新词指的是新近创造的词语，这样的词语可能正在被融入日常使用中，但尚未被主流词典所收录。新词通常会与特定人物、出版物、时期或事件有直接联系。比如说，在每年中华人民共和国教育部公布的《中国语言生活状况报告》中，都会包含一些汉语新词，譬如2007年的博客、谷歌、裸替、晒客等。大部分网络用语也属于新词。
